SMART MOBILITY HACKATHON

Oslo, 16-18 September 2016

BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Oslo will play an important role in the global responsibility to reverse climate change, through the city’s ambitious goals of 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 – and a 95% reduction by 2030.

Oslo is a fast growing city. Currently 640.000 people live here – this number will increase to 830.000 by 2040 (the Oslo region currently has 1,55 million inhabitants). This growth, combined with the goal of almost zero greenhouse gas emissions, represents a major challenge for the city.

Today more than half of Oslo’s greenhouse gas emissions are related to transport, Smart Mobility is therefore the primary objective of this hackathon.

SMART CITY - SMART MOBILITY

Smart City Oslo is a collective term for initiatives that demonstrates how technology and ICT can be used in areas such as urban development, sustainable transport and city governance.

Central to the idea of a Smart City is the use of technology to enhance sustainability, livability and workability. In terms of transport, this means using technology together with current and future infrastructure in an intelligent, sustainable and cost-effective way to create ‘Smart Mobility’.

Smart Mobility is a strategic focus in Oslo that shall reduce emissions related to transportation of goods and people, and consists of areas such as:

  • Renewable energy stations
  • Charging solutions for EVs
  • Emission and car free zones
  • Consolidation centres for reloading of goods
  • Car and ride sharing
  • Zero emission taxi fleet
  • Fossil free public pransport
  • Intelligent Transport Systems

THE HACKATHON CHALLENGE

The teams will be given raw data, APIs and IoT tools to deal with the following challenge:

Create innovative prototypes that will reduce air pollution (CO2 and/or local pollution) from transportation of people and goods in Oslo. Some suggested areas of focus may be (but are not limited to):

  • Making bicycling, walking and/or public transport more attractive (more effective, easier and/or safer)
  • Making charging of electric vehicles more convenient
  • Introducing car free or emission free zones in the city – while maintaining the ability to efficiently move people and goods around the city.

The proposed prototypes should address actual challenges and possibilities in the city, and consider Oslo’s strategy within mobility as mentioned above. The proposed ideas and solutions will be evaluated based on their possible impact on air pollution, their market potential or best use of our partners' technologies.

We will provide you with data from these sources (through different API's, and final list of data sources to be confirmed):

  • Ruter kollektivtrafikkdata | Public transport data
  • Sykkeltellinger i Oslo | Bike counters
  • Oslo Bysykkel / Urban Infrastructure Partner | City Bike data
